When Must Your Business Register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Below that line, registration is voluntary — and sometimes worth it.

VAT Calculator FAQs
How do I add VAT to a price?
To add 20% VAT, multiply the net price by 1.2. Example: £100 × 1.2 = £120 — so the VAT is £20.
How do I take VAT off a price?
To remove 20% VAT, divide the gross price by 1.2. Example: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net — so the VAT inside that price is £20.
What is the current UK VAT registration threshold?
£90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period. The threshold has been £90,000 since 1 April 2024.
Which VAT rate should I use?
Most goods and services are standard-rated at 20%. A smaller group — such as domestic energy — uses the reduced rate of 5%, and everyday essentials like most food and children’s clothes are zero-rated at 0%.
